Kuwait City, June 2, 2014 – The en.v Initiative, a leading organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab World and Zain, the leading mobile telecommunications provider in Kuwait, announce major accomplishments in the series of activities held in celebration of Earth Month as part of REUSE – a program that promotes environmental sustainability and community participation in Kuwait.
REUSE was repositioned last year from an annual event to an ongoing social development program which includes activities such as art competitions and educational roadshows, workshops, online environmental campaigns and community events.
In celebration of Earth Day, REUSE organized an environmental fair and interactive art installation at the Scientific Center from April 17th to 19th. The ‘crowd-sourced’ installation took the shape of a seven meter life-size whale constructed with a steel frame and wire mesh material. The whale was completed by participants through weaving used plastic bags into its frame, thus reusing them in a creative way to complete the outer-body of the whale. The aim of the activity was to raise awareness amongst the general public of the effects of consumer waste on Kuwait’s marine environment in a collaborative and fun way. Over 1000 students from 20 local schools, and 3000+ members of the general public participated in the event over the course of three days.
Waleed Al Khashti, Zain Kuwait’s Corporate Communications and Relations Manager said: “Zain’s long-term Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Programs support factors that improve the lives of people in society, and tackling environmental issues is one of the most important areas we work in. At Zain, we aim to promote a healthy and sustainable lifestyle by maintaining a healthy environment, and so we intend to continue launching initiatives that serve that purpose both internally as well as externally. The REUSE program, in collaboration with en.v, is an excellent platform for both organizations to spread awareness and educate people about the preservation of a healthy and sustainable environment.”
REUSE also held its first Upcycled Art Workshop for educators at Sadu House on May 1st, engaging a total of 25 participants and six trainers from 19 different Kuwaiti schools and universities. The workshop focused on how to raise awareness for the environment, promote recycling / upcycling, and highlight the importance of waste management to the community through classroom teachings in a creative way.
Ninar Al Qames, Community Outreach Manager at en.v, states “There is still work to do before the community at large becomes fully aware of its impact on the deterioration of our environment, but through the support of our partners in academic institutions we are able to connect with students that represent the hope for a more sustainable future”.
This summer, REUSE will be expanding its reach amongst the general community through the implementation of a social awareness campaign in the coming months, which will aim to engage the public directly in the promotion of eco-friendly lifestyles and the creation of an environmentally conscious Kuwait.
