On April 22^nd, The en.v Initiative (en.v), an organization dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world hosted a three hour interactive “Earth Day Celebration” event at REUSE 5.0 at the Australian College of Kuwait (ACK).The event was attended by 96 students from seven public and private schools in Kuwait to celebrate International Earth Day in a fun and educational way; learning about key environmental issues in Kuwait & innovative ways of addressing them.

The Earth Day celebration was preceded by a welcome tour of the REUSE 5.0 space by Zahed Sultan, Managing Partner and CEO of en.v. Thereafter, a host of interactive presentations were given to the students to raise awareness for various initiatives. Presentations included the following:

1.    Wildlife Protection by Ayeshah Al Humaidhi, Founder – K’S PATH
2.    Marine Conservation by Angelique Bhattacharjie, Program Manager – Al Yaal
3.    Youth Activism in Kuwait by Elisa Franceschinis, Program Manager – Voice for Success Program
4.    Environmental Youth Activism by Hiba Arshad, Founder – I AM Challenge Kuwait
5.    Eco-Friendly Weaving by Patricia Redding, Supervisor – Sadu House Kuwait
6.    Water Conservation by Joy Weir, Team Leader – Green Ambassadors Kuwait

The children were then offered a healthy meal from LoFat and a complimentary Body Mass Index (BMI) check supervised by one of their dieticians.  To conclude the Earth Day Celebration, internationally renowned Moroccan artist and photographer Hassan Hajjaj and award winning Graphic Designer, Tarek Atrissi gave short inspirational talks on incorporating eco-friendly thought into creative art projects. The students were then treated to an enthralling musical performance by boundary-pushing young Gnawa master, SimoLagnawi, before boarding buses back to their respective schools.

Schools that attended the Earth Day event at REUSE 5.0 included the Fahaheel Al-Watanieh Indian Private School, Kuwait International English School, American School of Kuwait, Al- Mansouriya High School, and Universal American School amongst others.

REUSE, now in its fifth year, serves as an opportunity for non-profit organizations, companies, professionals and aspiring creative talents to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of social responsibility and sustainability via a range of artistic mediums and interactive activities for the general public.

This year REUSE 5.0 is being held on April 19-22 of 2012 on the premises of the Australian College of Kuwaitfrom 5 to 9pm daily with an expansive participation list to date.  On a daily basis, REUSE 5.0 will feature a dynamic mix of art galleries, music, short films, a lounge, trendy eco- fashion & accessories & more. Zahed Sultan announces the release of his new extra play (EP) entitled “Reuse Me – EP” as well as a new music video for the title song “Reuse Me”. Through his new body of work, Zahed delves deeper into uncharted territory – fusing influences in alternative / electronica music with tantalizing vocals in both English and Arabic. Zahed debuts his vocal talents in both languages via this EP to express ever-growing concerns for social change around the world.

Aspiring for his sound to seep through crevices and appeal to today’s community of change-makers, Zahed’s conjures up two original tracks and two intricately woven remixes to lure listeners into his psyche – drawing on inspiration from the likes of Radiohead, The Gorillaz, Kanye West, SigurRos, and Nicolas Jaar amongst others.

About The Artist
Zahed is a music producer and social entrepreneur from Kuwait. He released his debut album “Hi Fear, Lo Love” on April 1st 2011 (http://bit.ly/lyVl0j) and attained success with his 2nd single “I Want Her But I Don’t Want Her.” Parisian Dj, Stephane Pompougnac, featured the single on the internationally acclaimed Hotel Costes 15 compilation, which was released on Sept. 26th 2011. REUSE is an annual exposition that serves as an opportunity for non-profit organizations, companies, professionals and aspiring creative talents to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of social responsibility and sustainability via a range of artistic mediums and interactive activities for the general public.

REUSE aims to promote eco-friendly living and provide a platform for those who strive to incorporate this principle into their work. As in previous years, REUSE will be divided into various modules, as we try to include as many eco-friendly initiatives as possible. This year REUSE 5.0 will held at the Australian College of Kuwait from 18th to 22nd April 2012 and the modules include the following:

Boutiques

This zone will be dedicated to retail boutiques that promote and sell eco‐friendly, fair trade, organic or natural products.

Restaurants

There will be multiple zones dedicated to providing attendees with a healthy mix of local/organic drinks and snacks. Restaurants, gourmet shops and lounges that carry organic food or incorporate environmental sustainability in their activities are welcome to apply.

Social Programs

This is a zone dedicated to highlighting social programs in the MENA region dedicated to sustainable development. All civil society organizations, corporate social responsibility programs or independent initiatives that promote this ideal can apply for a space at the exposition.

REUSE Community

This zone will be dedicated to showcasing the best works of students from various schools and universities around Kuwait. The works need to be made entirely out of scrap/recycled materials.

REUSE community exclusively invites teachers and art directors of schools / universities to apply (not individual students). REUSE will engage an extensive list of schools and university art educators to embed REUSE into their fall curriculum with the output being an exhibition held on their campus. en.v will attend these exhibitions and select the best works to showcase at REUSE 5.0. Selected students are invited to sell their chosen artworks at REUSE 5.0 and keep 100% of the profits! The best student artwork showcased at REUSE 5.0 will also win a $1000 cash prize!

Flea Market

This extension zone is meant to allow self-employed youth, freelance individuals, and members of the community at large to bring in crafts and second hand items from home and put them on display for sale to attendees. Innovative offerings will be the primary parameter for the selection.

Galleries

This will be a zone dedicated to art galleries to showcase their roster of artists/artwork promoting eco-friendly living.

Artists

This zone will be dedicated to commissions by en.v of regional artists that will explore the theme of sustainability through their respective creative mediums.

Workshops

REUSE 5.0 will host a series of training workshops for three days in the field of sustainability and creativity. These workshops will be conducted by globally renowned experts in the field of design and the arts.  Students, graphic designers, and artists are invited to apply for and attend these workshops.

A speakers’ forum will also be held during the course of the workshops and will feature exciting discussion topics by a panel of international experts.

Live Performances

The main stage at REUSE 5.0 will play host to several live acoustic music performances during the course of the exposition. Performers’ names will be announced soon. You are invited to book your tickets for these performances (in advance) as the availability of seats will be limited.

Recycling Center

en.v invites the community at large to bring their scrap paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, and glass from home to the REUSE 5.0 exposition. We will segregate all waste on-site and have it recycled on your behalf. Start saving everything today!

School Tours

We organize school tours to raise awareness of environmental & social issues among school children in order to make a positive impact on their lifestyle. Educators can book a guided school tour of REUSE 5.0 (in advance) for their respective class(es) / grades.

Film Screening Room

In this zone we will be screening documentaries and films related to environmental and social issues worldwide. We welcome submissions by amateur or professional directors and producers for consideration.

Volunteers

We always welcome volunteers to help us setup and manage the various modules of REUSE 5.0 and assist participants and attendees during the exposition.

Ceremonies

On the first day of REUSE 5.0 there will be a private viewing evening and inauguration ceremony dedicated to our sponsors, as well as an exclusive VIP tour for public sector attendees (by invitation only).

On the last day of REUSE 5.0 there will be a short ceremony dedicated to awarding the participants with the most innovative and notable contributions to the exposition.

Another way to participate in REUSE is as a sponsor. Approved sponsors’ brands (logos) will be featured in REUSE 5.0’s six-month multimedia campaign. Partner organizations will receive a 2x3m booth to showcase their achievements in social responsibility, along with a host of other benefits for the duration of the REUSE 5.0 exposition.
